Why is your ice cream called Hill Station?
We've always loved travelling. One of the best parts of travelling is when, at the end of a long day or a long journey, you arrive at a nice quiet retreat to wind down. And that was the original idea behind hill stations. They were established by Europeans in the mountains of the tropics as a way to escape the heat, dust and hubbub of the sweltering plains and big cities. Literally they were places to chill out.
You still find them in the tropics, but now they're used by locals as well as foreign travellers. We found them and we found them inspiring. So we created Hill Station ice creams with the same spirit of adventure.
What makes your ice creams different?
First, just taste it and you'll taste a difference. The difference comes from these facts:
- It's made with fresh cream and milk and real (not powdered) egg yolk. We do use a small amount of skimmed milk powder to make up for the lower amount of sugar in the mix.
- We use only natural ingredients, nothing artificial.
- We pump much less air into it than most other ice creams.
This makes Hill Station - an all-natural dairy ice cream that's denser and richer than other cheaper ice creams - super-premium if you want to give it a category.
It's also much less sweet. That comes from cutting back on the sugar. We do that so the taste is better - less cloying, subtler, more complex, more real.
Is Hill Station ice cream suitable for diabetics?
We still use sugar even though we use less than most. So our ice cream won't suit a strict diabetic diet. It might be fine for a less rigorous regime. But, hands up, we're not experts so you should consult your doctor.
Is it suitable for vegetarians?
As long as you're a vegetarian who's happy to eat dairy products and eggs. We put nutritional information on our packaging so you can check exactly what's in a tub. You can also find nutritional information and a full list of ingredients when you roll your mouse across a tub on our flavour pages. You'll see that we use fresh whole milk, fresh double cream and real egg yolk. And we use absolutely no additives.
What about GMOs? And gluten? And nuts?
We don't let GMOs anywhere near and we have no wheat-based ingredients. None of our ice creams contain nuts. However, we do handle nuts in our factory.
Is the egg yolk in Hill Station ice cream pasteurised?
Not just once but twice. So is the milk and double cream.
Where can I buy Hill Station ice cream?
In more and more places every week. In delicatessens, farm shops, good food stores around the country. And you'll also find Hill Station in some major supermarkets. But if you have trouble finding it, just email us at info@hillstation.co.uk and we'll tell you the nearest shop where you can buy it.
Can Hill Station ice cream be refrozen once it's thawed?
Preferably not, simply because we use only fresh natural ingredients and they need to be looked after. Thawing and refreezing creates large ice crystals that spoil the texture, making it a bit grainy.
What about new recipes?
You tell us. We're always looking for new recipes, thinking there's bound to be a fresh taste and a better ingredient over the next hill. But if you've made a discovery, tell us what you've found.
